Wolfenstein 3D birinci sahis aksiyon oyunlarini baslatali 10 yil oldu ve en sonunda herkesin favori Nazi katili B.J. Blazkowicz Return to Castle Wolfenstein ile geri döndü. II. Dünya Savasi sirasinda geçen Return to Castle Wolfenstein?da Nazileri süper asker ordusu yaratmak için karanlik sanatlarla ugrasirken bulacaksiniz. Dogal olarak Nazilerin yoluna çikan tek kisi Blazkowicz olabilir, bu çilginligi sona erdirmek için düsman hattinin gerisinde görev sizi bekliyor. Genel olarak bakildiginda tek kisilik oyun tam bir hazine ? ne de olsa Nazileri öldürmeyi herkes seviyor. Ancak hikaye oradan oraya atliyor, düsman yapay zekasi çok da etkileyici degil ve çogu oyuncu oyunu 10 ile 15 saat arasinda bitirebilir. Tek kisilik oyun Half-Life ve ¬No One Lives Forever gibi oyunlar tarafindan yaratilan standardin gerisinde kaliyor.
Aslinda, Return to Castle Wolfenstein ile ilgili en iyi sey takim tabanli çokluoyuncu modu. Her çokluoyuncu macerasinda Axis ve Allies gruplari mevcut ve her iki taraf da dört karakter sinifi sunuyor: mühendis (engelleri kaldirir), sihhiye (takim üyelerini iyilestirir), tegmen (hava saldirilari çagirir, cephane yeniler) ve asker (keskin nisan tüfekleri, alev silahlari ve diger garip silahlari kullanabilen tek sinif). Oyunda tümü de mükemmel tasarlanmis sekiz çokluoyuncu haritasi bulunuyor, basarili olmak için takim olarak hareket etmelisiniz. Sonuçta ortaya Counter-Strike veya Half-Life?in Day of Defeat modu hayranlarini tatmin edecek bir oyun deneyimi çikmis durumda.
Grafik olarak, Return to Castle Wolfenstein muhtesem görünüyor. Güçlü Quake III motorunu sonuna kadar kullaniyor ve her biri de mükemmel hazirlanmis karakter modelleri, patlamalar ve isik efektleri kullaniyor. Ancak müthis grafikler ve çokluoyuncu oyunu ortalama tek kisilik oyun deneyimini kapatmaya tam olarak yetmiyor.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein RTCW starts with a bang. B.J. Blazkowicz, a polish-born agent for the OSA (Office of Secret Actions), gets caught during an operation nearby the castle of Wolfenstein in the northern outskirts of Germany. After seeing his fellow colleague, Agent One, being tortured to death by a twisted nazi-doctor, B.J. decides to escape and knocks out a patrolling soldier. Soon he gets assignments from the OSA to go and search the secret plans of the 3rd Reich, and finds out the occult has interfered. The Germans have thought they cannot win the WW2 without a powerful might, something... supernatural is needed to overcome the odds against the Allied forces. The plans of the sickly Germans are twisted, leading back to a thousand years, to an ancient warrior in the early ages...
The plot is quite interesting, although the ‘’dry’’ and too-serious cinematic scenes tone down the experience a little. But then again, there’s a few cinematic scenes showing off some action and B.J.’s stoned, smiling facial-expressions. But other than that, the storyline’s quite nice indeed, not at all boring in my opinion as some of the other reviewers out there have said. And, the supernatural zombies, skeleton-warriors and supersoldiers fit into the game indeed, the atmosphere is nice, not realistic of course, but there’s enough ‘’realistic’’ WW2-shooters out there. The game would be rather boring without these colourful characters, the Nazis were doing some somewhat occult examinations during their history in real life, this whole supersoldier-Heinrich-zombie –thing really fits into the game. It’s quite fascinating, to find out what you’re up against and be afraid of a zombie lurking behind the next corner, breathing its cold, dead breath into your nostrils.
